What is Calcium Carbide?
Calcium carbide (chemical name: calcium acetylide, molecular formula: CaC2) appears as gray, brown, yellow, black or brown bulk solid. It serves as the basic raw material in synthetic organic chemistry industry.
Main Applications
Reacts with water to produce acetylene, which can compose many organic compounds including synthetic rubber, synthetic resin, acetone, olefine ketone and carbon black. Acetylene oxygen flame is widely used in metal welding and cutting.
When heating powdered calcium carbide with nitrogen, produces calcium cyanamide (lime nitrogen). Heating lime nitrogen with table salt forms calcium and sodium cyanides mixture, commonly used in gold mining and heavy non-ferrous metal processing.
Used as desulphurizer in steel industry.
Production Technology
The electrothermal process is commonly used to produce calcium carbide. Calcium lime and carbonaceous material (charred coal, anthracite or petroleum coke) are combined in the carbide furnace, producing calcium carbide through arc melting reaction at high temperatures.
