Steelmaking Electric Furnace: Introduction to the Advantages of the Tube-Type Water-Cooled Furnace Cover

Traditional furnace covers for steelmaking electric furnaces are typically constructed from refractory bricks. However, this design presents several drawbacks, including frequent brick cracking, poor structural integrity, high energy consumption, short service life, and lengthy maintenance periods.

To overcome these issues, a tube-type water-cooled furnace cover has been developed. This innovative design offers low energy consumption, extended service life, and ease of replacement and maintenance.

Structure and Design

The water-cooled furnace cover consists of a main frame, multiple water-cooling blocks, and a removable inner section (small furnace cover). The water-cooling blocks and small furnace cover are fabricated using closely arranged steel tubes, including straight sections, 180° elbows, and 90° elbows, all welded into a sealed water channel network.

The main furnace cover frame is welded from an outer ring, inner ring, water inlet pipes, main return-water pipes, and connecting return pipes. Both ends of the water pipes are welded to the outer and inner rings. Hangers are welded onto the water pipes to support the water-cooling blocks. The outer ring is equipped with lifting lugs and a water inlet flange, while positioning pins on the inner ring secure the small furnace cover in place.

Advantages

- Effective Cooling: The water circulating inside the tube network continuously removes heat, significantly lowering the operating temperature of the furnace cover.

- Energy Efficiency: Reduced heat loss and lower cooling requirements contribute to lower overall energy consumption.

- Long Service Life: Under normal operating conditions, the water-cooled furnace cover can withstand over 1,500 heats—more than 200 times longer than traditional refractory-brick covers.

- Easy Maintenance and Transport: The modular, split structure allows for straightforward replacement of individual components and simplifies handling and transportation.

In summary, the tube-type water-cooled furnace cover provides a durable, efficient, and maintainable alternative to conventional refractory brick designs, enhancing the operational performance and cost-effectiveness of electric arc furnace steelmaking.
